Reflection: Use of Aristotle’s Means of Persuasion in a Portfolio Document

Ethos, Pathos, and logos are methods of persuasion used to persuade the audience. Ethos is an appeal to ethics, and it is a means of persuading somebody regarding the character or credibility of the persuader. Pathos means persuading an audience by appealing to their emotions, and Logos persuades an audience by utilizing logic, reason, or facts. This essay will educate the reader about the through-the-fire story use Aristotle’s domains of rhetoric very well and using the three domains to enhance the story.

Through the fire uses Aristotle’s domains of rhetoric very well. Because I have use ethos to show the audience that I, the journalist, have great character and are credible. And to Trust my words as I tell them this story of the Joseph family surviving a car fire going through the physical, financial, and psychological issues from the accident that impacted the family and overcame this challenge. Also, I use ethos with the experts like Norman Addison and Dr. Ralph Sinclair to appear in this story to share their expertise with the audience on the car fires and second-degree burns.

The audience has been convinced that the experts have great character and they are credible. In this manner, their words can be trusted. I use pathos to get the audience to get in touch with their emotions with this story. The audience felt angry at the Interstate Motor Company knowing about the design flaw in the car’s fuel system that leads to the car fires but did not do anything to correct the problem.

The audience felt scared to see that the Joseph family got hurt in the car accident, was in extreme pain, and their skin suffered second-degree burns. The audience felt happy that the good Samaritans came by the accident and led the Joseph family to safety. The audience felt sad to see the Joseph family go through physical, financial, psychological results from the accident.

The audience felt joyful to see that the Joseph family is alive and will make a full recovery. And in a better state and overcame this challenge in their lives. I use logos for the facts about the car fires and the second-degree burns from the experts. Norman Addison, a car fire expert, said, ” Sixty- two percent of the car fires and lethal car fires began in the motor, running gear, design flaw or the wheel area of the car.” Dr. Ralph Sinclair, a medical expert, said, ” families such as the Joseph family who have second-degree burns are to survive from the injuries.”

To enhance ethos in the story, I would use quotes from the Joseph family, who has experienced the accident firsthand; the audience would be more likely to believe them. And put those quotes in the story. To enhance pathos in the story, I would use metaphors to describe the car accident to the audience; for example, the car burns like a forest fire.

This can trigger emotional responses from the audience. And to enhance the logos in the story, I would use a picture of a design flaw that led to the car accident; this will be the evidence that shows the audience how the car accident got started. Also, I would provide pictures of the family’s second-degree burns they received at the accident. This will be the evidence to show the audience what happened to the Joseph family.
